Media in the Classroom

You likely are familiar with different types of media used to present information from when you were a student. Using media in this manner is a form of communication. Some of these may have included movies or videos, visuals or pictures, blogs, podcasts, or some other outside reading. For example, the “I Love Lucy” video shared earlier in this text. As with all areas of teaching, there are effective and ineffective ways to use media in your teaching.

Application via “I Love Lucy” – Part 3

  1. Media
    • Reflect on how past educators have used media in their classes. What was effective? Ineffective?
    • Using the information from the article, how might the use of media be improved?
  2. When thinking back to the I Love Lucy video, if you were not familiar with I Love Lucy, you likely noticed that the video is in black and white. Did you notice that the supervisor referred to Lucy and Ethel as “girls”? When this TV show was made, this terminology was not offensive; however, referring to grown individuals as “girls” today can be offensive. It is important to view the media that we share in the classroom with the mindset of what may be included that could be offensive today that may not have been in the past.
    • What additional terms, items, or feedback do you need to provide to your students and families and administrators regarding the media you are choosing to share?
