Applications for Teaching

Now that you have learned about the many aspects of communication and applying this information in the context of working with families and guardians, you might be asking yourself how you can use this information in your work with students. Besides reading the information on communication and helping your students understand how to communicate, it is important to know about the development of one-self and the impact that language has on one’s identity, and how to foster a sense of belonging. Educators need to recognize and think critically about how they communicate and how cultural norms and patterns of communication have shaped their ideas about education, their community, and their students. The self is defined in relation to others, so educators must reflect on their position vis à vis their students to communicate effectively.

Self-Identity

Two resources on the topic of self-development and identity are provided below.  The first is an OER resource on the self and identity. The second is from Kathy Collier, which explains how she fostered self-development and identity in her students through a mini-unit. As you read this information, think of how you might foster identity development and self-expression in your own students.

Fostering Belonging

It is important to know that a student will not be able to learn unless they feel valued and part of your community in the classroom. Moreover, it is important that this sense of belonging be communicated to your students. Below is a video from Sobrarto Early Academic Language (SEAL) on how to help students feel a sense of belonging.
