Introduction to Skin of Scalp (thin skin)

Thin skin covers the majority of body surfaces other than the bottoms of the feet (plantar surface) and palms (palmar surface).  As its name suggests, the overall thickness of the epidermis of thin skin is much thinner than the epidermis of thick skin.  However, thin skin is extremely flexible and lightweight and still provides an effective layer of protection over body tissues.  The dermis of thin skin typically contains a variety of accessory structures such as sweat glands, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and numerous sensory receptors.  The number of accessory structures in thin skin varies greatly depending on the region of the body that the skin covers.

There are numerous tutorial image sliders in this chapter designed to give you a comprehensive understanding of the structure and function of skin covering the scalp (thin skin).  The first two tutorial image sliders focus on the layers of thin skin and a general overview of accessory structures found in skin covering the scalp.  Following that are two additional image sliders that provide greater detail on the structure and function of hair follicles and eccrine (merocrine) sweat glands.
