20 Assess HyFlex Experience through Learning Engineering Lens

What is learning engineering?

Learning engineering is a process and practice that applies the learning sciences using human-centered design and engineering methodologies and data-informed decision-making to support learners and their development. It is Endorsed by ICICLE[1], the International Consortium for Innovation and Collaboration in Learning Engineering,

Applying Learning Engineering to HyFlex Teaching Project

Q. How can the learning engineering process be applied to document learning from HyFlex teaching as a project?

We have adopted the following based on “Developing Instructor Training for Diverse & Scaled Contexts: A Learning Engineering Challenge” [2]

The learning Engineering process

The Team:

  • The HyFlex project team is comprised of project leads (Deana and Director), training facilitators (Instructional Designer and Technology Trainer), technology assistants (TLC recruiter and students), and, of course, the piloting faculty. The office’s institutional effectiveness and the Multimodal Student Success Committee are also working closely with the team.
  • The project leads coordinate the overall HyFlex Project plan and logistics of faculty recruitment and stipends.
  • The facilitators coordinate training schedules and HyFlex Design and HyFlex technology training, with follow-up on deliverables from the course design training.
  • Faculty and student technology assistants attend training. Faculty revise their course artifacts to adapt to the HyFlex mode of learning.

Implementation:

  • Using the revised course, faculty teach students using the HyFlex modality, giving students greater flexibility in attendance and activities.
  • As faculty and students experienced the HyFlex teaching and learning process, data was captured from instructors and students by OIE and facilitators.

Investigation

  • Facilitators do an inventory of the training course with feedback from faculty for revision.
  • Project leads, facilitators, and OIE analyze the data that has been captured from instructors and students.
  • Faculty investigate their teaching approaches to identify areas in need of improvement, which creates additional iterations of the learning engineering process
