Learning Objectives

By carefully reading this chapter and completing the learning activities within it, you should be able to do the following:

  • Describe the zones of a drainage basin and how discharge, velocity, and erosion change within those areas
  • Describe the depositional and erosional features along a stream by discussing what they are, how they form, and how they relate to stream velocity
  • Explain what has caused long term decreases in water availability throughout the Colorado River Basin
  • Discuss the impacts of dams and water diversion practices on surface water resources
  • Apply knowledge of irrigation practices such as water diversions or groundwater pumping to discuss long term water availability for an area
