Learning Objectives

By carefully reading this chapter and completing the learning activities within it, you should be able to do the following:

  • Identify and describe the chemical and physical layers of the Earth.
  • Explain the basic theory of plate tectonics including what plates are and the processes that cause them to move.
  • Differentiate between the three types (and any subtypes) of plate boundaries by explaining basic geologic features and processes associated with each.
  • Analyze data to identify plate boundaries on the planet
