Chapter 1B. Earthquakes

Learning Objectives

By carefully reading this chapter and completing the learning activities within it, you should be able to do the following:

  • Explain what an earthquake is and where they occur (plate boundaries/intraplate EQs)
  • Discuss how earthquake size is measured (intensity vs. magnitude)
  • Distinguish between the different types of seismic waves including what controls wave velocity inside the earth and how waves are used to locate earthquakes
  • Describe the different earthquake hazards and how they cause damage/destruction
  • Analyze data for an area to assess earthquake risk
