By carefully reading this chapter and completing the learning activities within it, you should be able to do the following:
- Explain what an earthquake is and where they occur (plate boundaries/intraplate EQs)
- Discuss how earthquake size is measured (intensity vs. magnitude)
- Distinguish between the different types of seismic waves including what controls wave velocity inside the earth and how waves are used to locate earthquakes
- Describe the different earthquake hazards and how they cause damage/destruction
- Analyze data for an area to assess earthquake risk
