Learning Objectives

By the end of this section, you will be able to:

  • Describe resources in our library that can be used to lower textbook costs
  • Explore library collections applicable to your course material needs

Course Materials Support

Your course materials are chosen by you with great care to provide the pedagogical experience important to you.  You know which materials you want to use in your courses.  The library and its partners, however, can help you provide copies or expand access to your course materials for your students.  These include, but are not limited to:

LIBRARY E-BOOK COLLECTION

Our library has an extensive e-book collection.  There is a possibility that the book you use for your course could be in the collection or added to it easily.  Your subject-specific library liaison can help you find titles in the e-book collection and negotiate the available user number so all students in your course can access the book at the same time.  This is a great way to have a 1:1 replacement for the book you are using now! Students have access to the title the first day in class with a simple link you can share in your syllabus, in D2L, or via email.

PLACING COURSE MATERIALS IN THE LIBRARY

You can place some course materials in the library through Library Course Reserves or the Maverick Textbook Reserve Program. A complete list of course materials from both can be found on the library’s Textbooks & Course Reserves Page. If you have questions, please ask us.

  • Library Course Reserves
You can place other materials on Course Reserve outside of the Maverick Textbook Reserve Program. This course reserve collection includes both library-owned materials and faculty-owned materials and can be print or electronic materials. Get more information on how to place materials on Library Course Reserves.
  • Maverick Textbook Reserve Program
A longstanding program under the combined efforts of Student Government, Barnes and Noble Bookstore, and Library Services, this service provides textbooks for undergraduate classes with high enrollment numbers for short-term checkout from Library Services. The Maverick Textbook Reserve Program is a unique program and opportunity for students choosing to check out expensive textbooks for a couple of hours at a time in lieu of shelling out large sums of money for the rental, or purchase of a used or are textbook. Contact Janine Haslach for more information.

REQUESTING LIBRARY MATERIALS

Contact your subject-specific library liaison to request resources to use for or supplement your course. Please note not all resources are available for the Library to purchase.

USING LIBRARY ARTICLES AND/OR BOOK CHAPTERS

Many courses use articles or chapters instead of or in addition to textbooks.  If this is the case for you, we strongly encourage linking to articles through D2L as a best practice rather than downloading the PDF and sharing it.  Check out our how-to guide.  Need help curating a list of articles or tracking down a difficult source that could work as course readings? Librarians are happy to help you search for great resources that fit your needs!

DIGITAL COLLECTIONS

Minnesota State University Mankato provides access to more than 30,000 streaming video titles for our faculty and students. See this libguide for access and more information about the platforms the Library subscribes to. These titles include documentaries, feature films, ethnographies, primary source material, and much more. Many of these titles are also listed in MavScholar. As most of our streaming video partners are adding content on a regular basis, however, it is a good idea to check the different sites listed in this guide if you do not find a title you want in the catalog.

The sections of this guide will describe and link to the streaming content vendors we have licensed. There is also information on how to include this content in D2L or another course site.

Additionally, if your students need streaming access to an individual title we have not already licensed, we can usually work that out. Whenever you need assistance with video content of any kind, send an email and we will be glad to help.

These are just some of the ways that the library can help you.
