10 Jordan, Ayat Hourani

Jordan

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is located with close proximity to major bodies of water like the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. Its population was last reported in 2022 which is 11.29 million.

I am from Jordan and my name is Ayat Hourani. I have been working as a nurse for five years, and the COVID-19 pandemic was unlike anything I had ever experienced. Nurses during this period faced intense pressure and stress due to the high volume of patients, shortages of protective equipment, and the constant risk of infection. We worked long hours, often without adequate breaks, and witnessed significant suffering and loss among our patients.

The overwhelming workload and patient volume were compounded by shortages of resources like personal protective equipment and staffing. Despite these challenges, the importance of adaptability, resilience, and teamwork became more evident than ever. We had to quickly adjust to new protocols and procedures, supporting each other through the toughest times.

The virus spread rapidly across the globe, affecting virtually every country and community within a short period. It caused severe respiratory illness and had a higher mortality rate compared to other recent outbreaks like the flu. The COVID-19 pandemic changed the practice and perspectives of many healthcare professionals, including nurses. It brought about significant changes in healthcare delivery, infection control protocols, and the way patient care is provided.

Throughout this time, I learned the true value of our profession and the strength we possess as a community of healthcare providers. The experience was harrowing, but it reinforced my dedication to nursing and the essential role we play in society.

Additional Information About Nursing in Jordan

A notable progress has been made in the country’s healthcare system, especially in the areas of immunization, child and maternal health, and access to essential medical services. However, Jordan’s healthcare system still faces difficulties, such as a shortage of healthcare workers, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has put more strain on the system’s already limited resources. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted both the strengths and weaknesses of Jordan’s healthcare system, including the resilience of nurses who played a critical role in managing the crisis. Many nurses found themselves on the front lines, working long hours under challenging conditions.

Nursing education in Jordan has developed in alignment with international standards, particularly influenced by North American and British models. Since the 1970s, nursing programs have expanded, and today, several universities offer comprehensive nursing programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Jordanian Nursing Council plays a pivotal role in regulating and advancing nursing education, ensuring that nurses are well-prepared for both clinical practice and leadership roles. Jordanian nursing education focuses on evidence-based practice, patient-centered care, and the development of critical thinking skills.
