Chapter 3: Typical Social & Emotional Development

By Amy Landers, PhD

Social and emotional development occurs as children learn who they are, how to manage their behaviors and emotions, and how to successfully interact with others.  This development forms the foundation for future relationships, influences students’ self-concept, and impacts their ability to cope with life’s challenges. In this chapter, we will delve deeper into selected aspects of social and emotional development that may impact academic performance and social relationships. Understanding these concepts can help you better understand and support your future students by maintaining an awareness of which skills are emerging versus developed and using that understanding to support the personal development of your students.
