Conclusion

In this chapter, you learned about students with emotional or behavioral challenges, the impacts on their development and school success, and support for them in the classroom, including proper identification. You processed your learning through the experiences of “Tokala,” a middle schooler.  The information shared was clear about what has been consistently successful, and what has been less directly researched, yet worthy of consideration. You also learned about the most current trends of equity and inclusion concerning students with social, emotional, and behavioral needs. Human learning is complex and has multiple underlying dimensions, particularly when learning is impacted by emotional and behavioral factors that differ from typical development and can impact school success. At this critical moment, as you continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath, all students’ social and emotional well-being should continue to be at the forefront, along with support for their success.
