Module 4: The Next Step

At this point in our FLCs, it’s likely that you’ve identified some equitable teaching practices that you already employ in your classrooms and also have chosen “just one thing” you’re ready to implement via your Action Plan. In this module, we’ll introduce some innovative approaches to equity you might consider for the long-term. Even if none of these innovations are the right fit for you, we hope that surveying some of the possibilities will help you be open to challenging assumptions about how our work “should” or “must” be done. By the end of this module, you should be able to

  • Analyze approaches to reducing and resolving microaggressions in the classroom, so that students’ brains can be in a learning state.
  • Evaluate unconventional strategies for assessment and grading.
  • Contrast assessment for “compliance” with assessment for “competence.”
  • Consider what privilege may be necessary to surrender should you choose to implement one or more of these approaches in your teaching.
