Module 3: Taking (Evidence-Based) Action

As Zaretta Hammond noted in her Module 1 interview, culturally responsive teaching is not just guesswork and feel-good activities; we have a pretty good idea of how learning works and what practices are most equitable. In this module, the Key Content will ask you to reconsider what constitutes effective teaching, suggesting ways to imbue relevance and rigor into teaching and learning that are consistent with what we’re discovering about how people learn. The Deeper Dive then offers more extensive research, resources, and tools to help you implement “just one thing,” whatever direction you may be heading with your Action Plan, in a way that is evidence-based.

By the end of this module, you should be able to

  • Identify culturally responsive teaching and engagement strategies that center students’ cultural learning tools.
  • Challenge common myths about teaching that can increase inequity in student learning outcomes.
  • Explain why structure and transparency are so important to enhancing equity in learning environments.
  • Apply research-informed, practical standards to your selection of course materials and tools in ways that facilitate greater equity for students.
  • Implement proactive accessibility practices in your learning environments.

You will be creating your initial Action Plan draft and sharing it with your partner(s) during this module, so don’t forget to Do These Things!
