Module 2: Your Role
It’s time to consider our roles, both as educators and community members, in bringing equity into our classrooms and communities. Returning to our overarching framework of relationships, relevance, and rigor, in this module we will also place an emphasis on how intentional efforts to foster healthy relationships with students can make a difference in their learning outcomes. Creating authentic, trusting relationships starts with your own mindsets, and therefore we ask you in this module to do a great deal of self-reflection and self-evaluation.
By the end of this module, you should be able to
- Differentiate between deficit thinking and asset thinking.
- Employ proactive techniques and resources that support student emotional resilience and mental health.
- Explain the connection between relationship building and maximizing students’ learning capabilities.
- Evaluate your current incorporation of equitable teaching practices into your classrooms.
- Determine equitable teaching practices that would be a fit with your classes, students, and institutional resources.
