Discussion: Lived Experiences

Our work in this module asks you to think about the lived experiences of those who have faced structural inequities in our classrooms, communities, and systems. Choosing one of the questions below, respond with that context in mind.

  1. White supremacy culture in higher education (Okun, Equity 2030): Where do you see characteristics of white supremacy culture ingrained in higher education systems and norms? Evaluate the Equity 2030 initiative from this context; what’s promising, and what’s potentially problematic?
  2. Seeing and hearing lived experiences (Adichie, Style): While it is important for us personally to see and hear the lived experiences of others, what is our responsibility to our students as educators regarding representation in the classroom?
  3. Stereotype threat (Steele, James, Hammond): Now that we’ve established the cognitive and emotional drain caused by constantly navigating stereotype threat, what implications does this fact have for your responsibility as an educator?
  4. Inquiry and Self-Assessment: The presentation discussed a need for a ‘paradigm shift’ to move towards equity. What, in your perspective, is the required paradigm shift and what will it take to achieve it?
