Strategy: Double-Entry Journal

This form of journaling is especially helpful for research, writing, preparing for discussion, or debate. It is usually done on a piece of notebook paper. To give you a visual, it looks like the following:

| Use this left column for specific places in the text: direct quotes—with citations—paraphrases, or even summaries. | Use the right-hand column for your own response and perspective. This right side could also be used for restating quotes, applying them to your issue at hand, responding to the text, agreeing or disagreeing with the idea, and so forth. |
